The peak body for electricity generators and retailers, the Australian Energy Council (AEC), has welcomed the announcement today of progress on the Renewable Electricity Guarantee of Origin (REGO) scheme.
The AEC’s interim Chief Executive, Ben Barnes, said, “There is growing voluntary demand from corporations for renewable electricity. It is important that these claims are verifiable, and the REGO scheme will ensure just that.
“A green certification scheme has strong practical, commercial appeal.
“International markets are mobilising around strict standards for hydrogen exports and want confidence green hydrogen is produced with truly renewable electricity.
“With the Renewable Energy Target set to wind down in 2030, this announcement today provides certainty to industry that there will be an enduring mechanism for green certification, allowing for better planning and investment in the energy transition.
“We look forward to seeing the Government’s final design for its Guarantee of Origin scheme and working with industry to ensure a swift implementation.”
